Start of the 15th Annual Meeting of the European Network of Official Medicines Control Laboratories (OMCLs) of the Council of Europe, Hotel Le Méridien Lav (Podstrana, Split)

On Tuesday, 18 May 2010, in Hotel Le Méridien Lav (Podstrana, Split), 15th Annual Meeting of the European Network of Official Medicines Control Laboratories (OMCLs) of the Council of Europe, hosted by Croatia for the first time, was officially opened. Previously, the annual meetings were hosted by Vienna, Prague, Rome, Limassol (Cyprus) and other cities in the Council of Europe member states.

The Annual Meeting was opened by:

  • Director of the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Healthcare (EDQM), Dr. Susanne Keitel
  • Head of the Croatian Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices, Assist. Prof. Siniša Tomić, PhD
  • Ms Mia Balija, MSc (Pharm), representative of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia
  • Mr Miran Tomasović, mayor of Podstrana

The Annual Meeting, held on 17-21 May 2010, is jointly organised by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Healthcare (EDQM) of the Council of Europe and the Croatian Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices (HALMED), under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia. It brings together over 200 participants from around 40 Council of Europe member states.

The goal of the Meeting is strengthening of international cooperation and knowledge and experience exchange among the European countries, member states of the Council of Europe, in the field of quality control of medicinal products and combating of counterfeit medicines. Documents will be adopted and procedures defined in order to maintain the continuing quality of performance of the quality control laboratories for medicinal products for human and animal use.

The mission of the European Pharmacopoeia and EDQM-a (a body of the Council of Europe responsible for the Secretariat of the European Pharmacopoeia) is protection and promotion of human and animal health by developing and elaborating quality standards for medicinal products for human and animal use. EDQM is responsible for a number of activities in the area of medicines quality and health protection, particularly the Official Medicines Control Laboratories (OMCLs) Network.

OMCL Network was established in 1994 under the aegis of the Council of Europe, in order to coordinate administrative and professional activities of the laboratories that are part of this network, facilitate exchange of knowledge among the competent authorities in Europe and influence the future development by adopting common standards based on legislative framework for testing of medicinal products.
