Ever since its establishment on 26th January 1995, the EMA has been dedicated to ensuring efficacy and safety of human and veterinary medicines throughout Europe and promoting research and innovation in medical science.

Seven EMA scientific committees and more than 30 working parties provide scientific expertise for the regulation of medicines by drawing on a pool of several thousand European scientific experts. This has encouraged the exchange of knowledge, ideas and best practices between European experts striving for the highest standards in medicines regulation.

HALMED experts participate actively in the work of EMA scientific committees and working groups and in the assessment of new medicines that undergo centralised procedure for all EU member states. By doing this, HALMED experts participate in the assessment of safety, efficacy and quality of medicines that are available to patients in the EU and ensure that only those medicines that have met the criteria stipulated by the EU legislation may be available to patients of Croatia and other member states.

EMA is part of the European regulatory network for medicines together with the European Commission and national competent authorities of countries of the European Economic Area. The EMA celebrates the 20th anniversary of its establishment in the same year that marks the fiftieth anniversary of the pharmaceutical legislation in the EU.
